How to pack items for storage
May 11th, 2017   Category: Storage Tips -

When you are moving from your house or having an office refurbished, it is important to ensure that all the items in the house or at the office are packed properly and safely. Remember, each item that you own has some financial or emotional significance. Sometimes those items need to be put into storage instead of going straight to the final destination. The tips below can make the process a lot easier.

Stock up on packing supplies:

Make sure that you plan in advance. You will need plenty of boxes that are of various sizes and can accommodate different home or office items. You are also required to have things such as duct tape, a marker pen to label the items and furniture covers. The packing supplies such as the boxes should be of good quality to protect your items.

Label your boxes:

When moving, don’t simply think about transporting goods from one location to another. Think about what will happen once the items get to their destination. The call to action behind labeling the boxes is to enable you to have a much easier time when unpacking. This means that when packing the items, do not just throw things randomly into different boxes. Be sure to label the ones with storage tags that you want to go into storage, so they are easily separated.

Do not overload the boxes:

You might be tempted to save on cost by cramming as many items as you can into a single or just a few boxes. Don’t, cramming different items in a single space exposes the items to an even greater risk of damage to the items and to those who are moving them. How exactly do you know that the boxes you are using to move are overloaded? Once you find the boxes bulging at the sides, it is likely that there is not enough space for the items packed and thus you should take out a few things.

Disassemble the furniture:

Today, most items of furniture are designed in such a way that they can be assembled and disassembled as one wishes. Disassembling your furniture items will go a long way in saving a lot of space for other items and thus save you on the cost. It is important that you keep the bolts and screws safely together in a small bag to help you reassemble when the time comes. Label the bags as well so that when you bring it out of storage, you know what items go with which.

With a little preparation, storing your items doesn’t have to be too much of a hassle. The only reason why the exercise can be challenging is due to poor planning. If you somehow feel that the process of moving is too much for you, there is always the option of hiring a professional moving company.
